ON DUTY WITH THE QUEEN
My Time As A Buckingham Palace Press Secretary
Dickie Arbiter with Lynne Barrett-Lee

This book might more accurately have borne the imprimatur, ”My Infatuation With Princess Diana”.

Arbiter, appointed a press spokesman for Queen Elizabeth in 1988, has much to say about the inner sanctum of British royalty.

But probably the main attraction for royal watchers reading this book will be the author’s detailed account of the many aspects of the troubled Diana’s life.

Arbiter had reported her movements for eight years as court correspondent for IRN, and then was responsible for her media-related activities at Buckingham Palace.

He points out that during her 16 years as a member of the Royal Family, Diana undertook some wonderful work.

She put ”a definitive lid on the myths surrounding diseases like leprosy and Aids, as well as drawing attention to those who had been so overlooked – the homeless, drug and alcohol addicts, the victims of landmines and so many others for whom life had dealt a hard blow”, Arbiter writes.

”She was a full-time mother who cherished and nurtured her sons, and she flew the flag for independent women everywhere.”

Arbiter, who confesses to having ”a very soft spot” for Diana, does not neglect analysing her complex personality and her relationship with Prince Charles.

Diana gossip aside, the author’s often breathless tittle-tattle about the inner workings of the Royal Family will surely fully satisfy the curiosity of many a royal fan.
