The Princess made a flying visit to British Aerospace, Warton, as the first part of her three-hour trip to the county.  She was greeted by a line-up of dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Simon Towneley and the Mayor and Mayoress of Fylde, Councillor John and Mavis Tavernor. After being introduced, she was whisked away in a 10-car motorcade to Nelson, east Lancashire.

Princess Diana came to Nelson in her capacity as patron of the Help the Aged Charity in what was the first Royal visit to Pendle since the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh came here in 1955.

Pendle people packed the streets of the town in their thousands to cheer the People’s Princess, waved Union Jacks and handed over countless bunches of flowers as she was shown the Pakistan Welfare Association’s drop-in centre for the elderly in Victoria Street, buying it a microwave oven herself after noticing it did not have one, although it was later stolen in a burglary.  She gifted the town with an autographed photo of herself.

She then went on to meet 18 members of the executive committee at the Ithaad welfare office in Cross Street and she later had a buffet lunch with the then Mayor, Coun. Miss Doris Riding, Mayoress Coun. Edwina Sargeant and other civic dignitaries at the town hall. Catering students from Nelson and Colne College produced the beautiful buffet lunch at the town hall in her honour.  ITHADD is Punjabi, meaning “United.”

The Prince, in his capacity as President of the Prince of Wales Advisory Group on Disability, visited with the Princess, the Portland Training College in Mansfield to open a £1 million extension to The College. They also visited the Fountaindale School and the two then went to the Council House in Nottingham for a seafood buffet lunch.  They met top Nottingham athlete Loreen Hall during the lunch.  Later, they walked around Nottingham’s Old Market Square, met the crowds waiting for them, and later appeared together on the Council House Balcony.  The special news article below outlines their activities from the lunch and walkabout as well as the tour of the Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade.

Their last stop of the day was the new headquarters of the Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade at Bestwood Lodge in the town of Arnold, which they officially opened.  They met with firemen who battled the fires, reviewed a guard of honor and viewed the control room, the actual nerve center of the new headquarters. They were also given a demonstration of the brigade’s activities including a rescue from a road traffic accident, decontamination of a chemical incident and a demonstration by part-time firemen.  Prince Charles was given a Notts Chief Fire Officer’s helmet.
