imagePrincess Diana opened Hale Leys Shopping Centre on March 2 1983, and thousands of people lined her route from the precinct to the Civic Centre despite the rainy weather. Among the crowds were some 200 children from Southcourt First School.

image Headmistress Bernice Chilton praised their good behaviour, saying: “We had biscuits to keep them quiet and apart from that nothing else. The atmosphere just carried them along.” image image

However, The Bucks Herald reported that security officials found the behaviour of the Princess rather more troublesome. Dressed in a stunning bottle green two-piece suit, she made up her own mind who she spoke to and where she wandered, delighting onlookers.
