10) State Tour of India, 1992 lilac dress – £66,000

During her 1992 State Tour of India, Diana wore a long, lilac wild silk gown embroidered with flowers, with a matching bolero jacket.

The long sleeved gown, designed by Catherine Walker, was described as being “in perfect keeping with India’s cultural standards”.

It was sold at Kerry Taylor Auctions in March 2013 for £66,000 (inc. buyer’s premium).

9) Pink sequined ivory crepe gown – £78,000

A pink sequined ivory crepe gown, designed by Catherine Walker for Diana’s 1991 state visit to Brazil. The colours were chosen specifically to avoid the green, yellow and blue of the Brazilian football team, or in the blue and white of the Argentinian football team, to whom Brazil had just lost.

Diana wore the dress to the film premier of Stepping Out, after which she wore it to a party and chatted at length with Liza Minnelli. She was chastised for her un-princess like behaviour the following day.

It sold for £78,000 (inc. buyer’s premium) at Kerry Taylor Auctions in March 2013.

8) 1987 Cannes Film Festival gown – £80,000

This light blue, silk chiffon dress was worn by Diana to the 1987 Cannes Film Festival sold for $132,000 (£80,000) at Julien’s Auctions in April 2011.

The floor length Catherine Walker gown was also worn by Diana during a photo shoot with Terrence Donovan in 1987 and in 1989 for a performance of Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal.

7) State Tour of India, 1992 black dress – £87,211

In 2011, Julien’s Auctions sold a black crepe evening gown worn by Diana during her 1992 State Tour of India for $144,000 (£87,211).

The short-sleeved Catherine Walker dress featured diamante embroidery on the top. The embroidery is inspired by Indian art motifs.

6) Sea green sequined evening gown – £90,000

A glamorous sparkling sea-green sequined evening gown by Catherine Walker, worn by Diana for the State visit to Austria in 1989 as well as on other occasions.

Diana loved this dress, and was photographed wearing it many times. It sold at Kerry Taylor Auctions for £90,000 (inc. buyer’s premium) in March 2013.

5) ‘Second’ wedding dress – £90,000

A replica of Princess Diana’s wedding dress was sold by Cooper Owen auction house for £90,000 in 2005.

The dress was worn during fittings for Diana’s wedding dress and is the same as the original, which featured St Mary’s lace sewn to the front panel.

The dress was used for Diana’s waxwork figure at Madame Tussaud’s, and was sold alongside an exact replica of the Princess’s wedding tiara.

4) Burgundy crushed velvet Back to the Future evening gown – £108,000

A Catherine Walker designed burgundy crushed velvet evening gown that Diana wore to the film premier Back to the Future (1985).

Diana also wore this dress when she visited Australia, coupling it with the Spencer tiara.

It sold for £108,000 (inc. buyer’s premium) at Kerry Taylor Auctions in March 2013.

A black halter-neck, silk crepe dress worn by Diana to the Palace de Versailles for “La Deuxieme Nuit International de L’enfrance”, organised by UNESCO in 1994, was sold by Kerry Taylor Auctions for £108,000 (inc. buyer’s premium) in March 2013.

The dress was designed by Catherine Walker and was trimmed at the neckline, and one hip, with black round and bugle beads.

This dress was also worn by Diana for the now world famous photo shoot by Mario Testino in a 1997 issue of Vanity Fair.

2) First official Royal appearance dress – £192,000

The black, off the shoulder, low cut dress worn by Diana on her first official appearance with her new fiancé, Prince Charles, was sold by Kerry Taylor Auctions for £192,000 (inc. buyer’s premium) in 2010. The dress was bought by a fashion museum in Chile.  The Emanuel dress was not greeted favourably by Prince Charles according to Kerry Taylor Auctions, who note that, upon seeing Diana in the dress, Charles told her that only people in mourning wore black.

The ‘Travolta Dress’ is a dark blue Victor Edelstein gown that Princess Diana wore during her famous dance with John Travolta at a White House event hosted by Ronald Reagan in 1985.

The dress was sold by Kerry Taylor Auctions £240,000 (inc. buyer’s premium) in 2013.
